Water gun. Or you can just beat him in the head everytime he does it.
Get your cat a new scratch post so that they have something else to scratch. Rub some catnip on it if they don’t take interest in it right away. If you see the cat scratching the new sofa then you should squirt it with water from a squirt bottle, then bring them over to the scratching post. Cats don’t like water and after a while they will understand that scratching the couch is bad and they will get squirted if they do it.
Obtain a cat scratching post, which is usually made of particle board wrapped in carpet. Posts can be purchased for about twenty dollars or they can be made at home. Some posts are equipped with additional features that your cat may like, such as high platforms for perching or dangling balls or toys for swatting.
Place the post in front the furniture at the position where the cat usually scratches. For example, you might place it at the corner of the couch.
Each day, as the cat begins to frequent the post, move it a few inches away from your furniture and towards the location where you intend to permanently place the post.
Spray the cat with water if it returns to the original scratching site. The water will not harm the cat, but it will discourage your pet from repeating the behavior.
Sprinkle cat nip on the scratching post to get his/her attention it..
Good luck!
Spray him with water every time he does it or you can hit them on the back with a rolled up piece of paper. ONE PIECE OF PAPER NO MORE! you don’t want to hurt the it’s only to discipline him. My cat always scratches the carpet instead of sofa so i don’t care my carpet is sh!tty anyway.
There is a spray designed to discourage cats from scratching. Also sticky back, or double sided tape works and hanging rolls of foil over it when you’re not there or not in the room will protect it. Apply foild and or tape over backs and arms and areas they like to attack
When all the protection is off because you’re home, when your cat scratches it tell her firmly no. encourage her to use her cat tree – take her over place her paws on it and pet her – and maybe spray her cat tree or scratching post with cat nip to encourage her – and when she scratches her cat tree etc, give her loads of praise.
This works I have two cats, an fabric armchair and my cats have never used it for scratching.
If you want to up the ante you can use a water bottle to aim and wet them but I’ve found a firm and semi loud NO works.
Yep. Use the Water bottle filled with tap water. Just spray your cat with the water bottle set on “stream” or a squirt gun. And squirt them several times-as many times as it takes for them to stop and run off. Don’t be wimpy; you have to show them who’s Boss. Get ‘em wet-they hate it! Important: You must do it as soon as you catch them doing it-every time. It helps to say “NO!” loudly at the same time you are squirting them. It’s a powerful behavior modification tool. Be persistent. It may take a few months, but eventually, your cat will stop.
You can use the water bottle/squirt gun technique to break your cat of other bad habits. I kept water bottles and squirt guns stationed around my apartment. It took about 3 months, but I broke my cat of clawing furniture, climbing drapes, getting up on the counter tops and tables, and trying to steal food off same. Once she finally stopped, she never did it again (I was persistent). She was so good after she quit, that I could have parties and leave food out, and she also never got into anyone’s unattended plate, no matter where they left it, even with sushi and sashimi (her favorite) on them.
My guests always commented on how good she was!
Invest in a scratching post! Cats need to scratch since they need to stimulate the blood circulation to their nails. This will make the problem lighter but he/she will still want to scratch the sofa so get a water pistol and when it is on the sofa squirt it and in a deep firm vioce say NO
The spray is called Bitter Apple. You should be able to get it at Petsmart, etc. Animals definitely don’t like it, so it usually works.
He definitely needs some place else to scratch tho.
Here is a list of items you can use to stop a cat from scratching:
A bottle/can with something noisy in it
Air (I use a balloon pump)
Aluminum foil
Anything citrus smelling (spray/rub in on whatever they’re starching)
Double sided tape

Spray that stops them (there all different kinds)

Trim their nails back once a week
Water bottle spray
Also if you have a scratching post & your cat is not using it you can get some catnip & rub it on there or they sell catnip spray. Also it might not be big enough. A scratching post needs to be as tall as the cat (about 32â€).
