I have this great old 1920s Empire Sofa (curled arms, navy velour, brass claw feet, uber comfortable)
But the problem is that it is sagging. I felt underneath the couch and I feel wire or springs or something like that. I have a friend who can reupholster, but I wonder about the springs or whatever on the bottom. How do I fix that so it wont sag?

For a temp fix, get a long strip of durable wood or MDF and put it under the cushions. Just make sure you measure before you go to the hardware store so they can cut it to size for you.

The springs probable need to be retied or replaced. I would not reupholster it unless it was absolutely necessary..if you must do it use the same kind of fabric that is on it now.

you need to retie the undersprings together again. Old sofas had a coil wire under cage that is wired together in series to provide a support platform. If the wire that holds each coil together is broken apart (which it does over the years) then the support is sloppy and it sags. Each coil is usally tied in 4 places to the surrounding ones.hope this helps.
