Positively not, to do so might create a time warp.

I was always told your not supposed to(my good ol parents :) ) but i have before.if your going to maybe just place the furniture a little out from the wall so its not completly blocked.

as a sheetmetalman, I would suggest you not block the return air vent…if too much air is blocked, it could tend to backpressure your units fan and burn it up…

If it was something big like a couch or something then I wouldn’t because the fabric can easily pull away from it and block the air intake. Something not so shielding like a small table or something I think would be okay, as long as it’s about 6 inches out from it…

Yes,,if you take into account a few considerations

    1,,Don’t block the airflow.
It inhales quite a large volume of air.

Normally we place furniture very near the wall.
Move the item further away from the vent than you’d normally position furniture.

    2…Convenience/Access
The Intake AirFilter needs to be replaced regularly.
    Think about that when deciding,,
If you really want the item placed in that position–no reason why not……but you may have to move it on a routine basis to keep filters clean.

One TIP that MIGHT be useful.
Think about how the Vent Grille Opens to access the filter,,,and how that might be affected by being blocked by furniture.
Most of them swing open like a door..
Removing & re-installing the grille/frame is easy—You MIGHT be able to Reverse it and get easier access to Filter,,,and save some furniture moving when replacing the filters in the future.

    3…Dust and stuff.
That vent is effectively same as “mouth of a vacuum cleaner”.
It draws all the dust, lint, pet hair,,even kitchen odors, smoke, etc
    towards it.
Anything sitting in front of the vent will be “bathed” in all that,,and will likely get more Dusty than other locations.

    4..Noise and AirDrafts.
A table or bookshelf wouldn’t care,,,
but a chair or sofa could be uncomfortable there??
Vent noise & drafts varies so much,,,all you can do is try and see how it works out.

The main things that really cannot be compromised,,
    AIR FLOW and Filter Access.

    Beyond that,,it’s up to you

    ** another thing….
    If it’s Your home,,not a rental/leased place…
You can RELOCATE the return air vent .
Some homes have the Vent in inconvenient places.
Occasionally,,they can be relocated without much trouble.
Others are just not practical to move.
There ARE “technical issues” to consider related to Function..
    But “not an impossible task”
It’s just something to think about.

You ask the time so I’m not going to build you a watch (like that one windy responder). Maintain a 3-1/2 inch clearance and you should be O.K.
